NDIS Explained
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) in Australia is an essential social initiative that provides personalised assistance to individuals with disabilities, their families, and caregivers. The program is managed by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA), which offers direct funding to eligible individuals, giving them greater power and flexibility in choosing the services they need. NDIS is designed to support those with severe and permanent disabilities that affect their daily lives.
NDIS covers all Australians under age of 65 and offers services, including personal care, access to the community, therapy services, and essential equipment. It embodies the principle that every person has the right to live an inclusive, empowered, and fulfilling life.
What Types of Support Does the NDIS Fund?
- Core Supports
Core Supports are central to an NDIS funding plan and are designed to assist individuals with disabilities in their everyday activities. This support category aims to enhance participants’ independence and community engagement.
Core Supports encompass four areas:
- Assistance with Daily Life
- Transport: For individuals who face challenges using public transportation
- Everyday items related to a person’s disability
- Assistance with Social and Community Participation
- Capacity Building Supports
Capacity Building Supports aim to equip participants with the skills and capabilities to pursue their goals and aspirations. It comprises nine sub-categories: improved living arrangements, increased social and community participation, finding and keeping a job, improved relationships, health and wellbeing, learning, life choices, and daily living.
Whether securing employment, enhancing social skills, or improving the ability to perform daily tasks, these supports are pivotal in fostering long-term skills and independence.
- Capital Supports
Capital Supports primarily cater to investments related to a participant’s disability that require significant financial outlay. There are two primary areas under this category:
- Assistive Technology
- Home Modifications
Each category of support under the NDIS is designed to provide comprehensive, holistic assistance, enabling individuals to lead more independent, fulfilling lives.
